Midi Quest XL Features

If you want to know about every new feature in Midi Quest XL, this is the page for you. It contains a comprehensive list of the latest enhancements that are unique to XL. Make sure you also check out the Midi Quest 9 feature list.

What is Midi Quest XL?

  • Midi Quest XL is the professional version of Midi Quest 9 and includes all of the most advanced editor/librarian features and is the only version of Midi Quest to include a VST plug-in.

VST Plug-in Support

  • Midi Quest XL includes a VST plug-in. This plug-in allows you to run Midi Quest XL in any software application that supports the VST standard.
  • The VST plug-in is only included with Midi Quest XL
  • The VST plug-in now supports VST parameter automation. All parameters edits can be recorded in your sequencer and played back later
  • For additional information on the VST plug-in, click here

Export Bank Names in XML Name Document format

  • Midi Quest XL is able to write XML Name files. This is a new name storage format recently approved by the MMA (MIDI Manufacturers Association) as a standard for describing all of the names of the various multis, combis, patches and other data in a MIDI device. Currently Midi Quest is the only editor/librarian software to support this new cross platform format.
  • If you are currently using Digidesign's ProTools or MOTU's Performer sequencing software on your Macintosh, you can now use Midi Quest XL to generate your patch name documents and store them on your Macintosh

Name Servers

  • In Midi Quest XL there are three Name Servers, one for Cakewalk's MASTER.INS file, one for Cubase Patch Name Scripts, and one for XML
  • What is a Name Server? A Name server provides an automated way to keep all of your Patch Name files up to date automatically so you don't have to update the Patch names in your sequencer every time you send a new bank out to an instrument. All you have to do is set up the Name Server and you can forget about it.
  • How does it work? You tell the Name Server where the files are that your sequencer uses to provide patch names. Once Midi Quest XL knows this,  every time you send SysX data out to the instrument Midi Quest automatically updates the appropriate files. Its easy and your sequencer will stay in sync with your instruments.
  • The Name Servers even support multiple installations so you could have a copy of Cubase SX, Cubase 5, Sonar 1, Sonar 2, Cakewalk Home Studio and Digidesign's ProTools running on a Mac and Midi Quest XL will keep them all updated

File Conversion

  • Import files stored in other Editor/Librarian formats

Instrument Creator

  • The Instrument Creator window has been greatly enhanced and is only available in Midi Quest XL
  • The left column lists all installed instruments in a tree view.
  • Expanding any node in the tree shows the drivers that are used by the instrument
  • Click on the instrument to build an instrument from driver components and specify the default Sets for the instrument
  • Click on any driver in the tree to open the Driver Creator portion of the window with the appropriate settings
  • With this new version it is no longer necessary to manually modify ini files as was required in previous versions
  • This new design makes it much easier to create your own instrument support

Graphic MIDI Monitor Window

  • The Graphic MIDI Monitor Window is now only available in Midi Quest XL
  • The window has been completely redesigned
  • The window also sizes itself automatically based on your computer's screen resolution
  • The window is capable of monitoring both MIDI input as well as MIDI data being send from Midi Quest

MIDI Controller Window

  • The MIDI Controller Window is now only available in Midi Quest XL
  • The Window has been completely redesigned

Panel Editing

  • While both Midi Quest 9 and UniQuest have a panel editor, its capabilities are no match for those of Midi Quest XL
  • With Midi Quest 9 and UniQuest, the Panel Editor can be used to rearrange an editor, change colors, reassign graphic files and basically make cosmetic changes to an editor
  • With Midi Quest XL, you can also use the Panel Editor to create your very own editors and complete instrument support
  • When creating your own editors, you have full access to SQML, Sound Quest's Macro Language which allows you to define each control in an editor
